Preparation

  • New wood: Unpreserved softwood timber should be treated with a suitable wood preservative.
    • For best results on new, uncoated softwood containing resinous knots, apply a coat of Aluminium Wood Primer to prevent staining and/or discolouration. Follow with a coat of Little Greene Intelligent ASP Multi-Surface Primer.
    • Resinous hardwoods require initial cleaning and treatment with Little Greene Aluminium Wood Primer (please refer to the relevant product data sheets for further details). This should be followed by a coat of Little Greene Intelligent ASP Multi-Surface Primer.
    • Ensure the moisture content of the timber is below 15% before commencing application. Wet wood should never be painted as it can cause blistering, peeling, cracking and premature coating failure.
    • Green oak should not be painted unless it has been exposed to the outside and dried for at least 6 months.
  • Metals: New ferrous/non-ferrous metals should be cleaned by hand or power tool to remove any surface rust prior to application. Bare or corroded iron or steel will require treatment with 2 coats of Little Greene Intelligent ASP Primer.
  • Plastics: For long-term performance and durability, clean and abrade all surfaces thoroughly. For best results, apply one coat of Little Greene Intelligent ASP Multi-Surface Primer.
  • Existing Paint Finish: Remove all loose and flaking paint. Degrease with a suitable detergent solution, then rinse with clean water. Sand thoroughly with medium grit sandpaper, e.g. 120-150, to create a smooth, defect-free surface, paying more attention to areas where paint has been removed. Make repairs properly and sand and apply a coat of Intelligent ASP Multi-Purpose Primer to properly prepare the surface.
  • New walls: For newly plastered surfaces, allow at least four weeks for the plaster to dry thoroughly. Apply a coat of Intelligent ASP Primer with the addition of 5 to 25% (by volume) water, depending on the porosity of the substrate.
    • This product is not suitable for painting over lime-based or other natural plaster substrates.
  • Existing Masonry: Lightly wash any existing paint to remove any dust or surface stains. Apply one coat of Intelligent ASP Primer diluted with 5 to 25% (by volume) water, depending on the porosity of the substrate. Finish by applying at least two full coats of topcoat as required.
    • This product is not suitable for painting over lime-based or other natural render substrates.

Application

  • Stir well before use.
  • Do not apply to surfaces when the ambient temperature is below 8°C.
  • Do not apply externally if there is a risk of rain or frost during application or the drying period.
  • Brush painting: Always use high quality synthetic bristle brushes of the appropriate size for the job. Apply Little Greene Intelligent ASP Multi-Surface Primer in even strokes and only extend the paint area so that a wet edge can be easily maintained.
  • For intricate items or where high ambient temperatures/ or high air flow conditions cannot be avoided, the working time can be extended by adding 10 to 15% (by volume) water.
  • Roller Painting: Use a short pile fur paint roller for best results on smooth surfaces. Increase the size of the roller nap when there are rougher surfaces. Keep all final roller strokes in the same direction, maintaining a wet edge throughout, and do not re-roll where the paint has already started to dry as there is a serious risk of streaking.
  • When high ambient temperatures/ or high airflow conditions cannot be avoided, the workability time can be extended by adding 10 to 15% (by volume) water.
  • A light sanding between coats will remove any dust spots and other surface stains, creating an almost professional finish.
