Clime Honed is a natural plaster, a mixture of lime and clay aggregates. It contains no cement (100% cement-free) and the organic content is zero. It is biodegradable and has achieved IAC gold status, EPD and HPD classification. Due to the flexibility of the materials, it can be used in both residential and commercial buildings, withstanding the demands of busy interiors.
Why Clay and Limestone together?
Armourcoat incorporates natural hydraulic lime into its clay plaster as we believe that plaster with clay as the sole binder is too weak for most environments.
Clay plasters are generally only one fifth to one quarter of actual clay. The remainder of the mix is graded aggregates such as sand. When clay plasters are applied in large thicknesses or dried very quickly, they have a significant tendency to crack because they are essentially mud.
Clay plaster also softens immediately if it comes into contact with water. Some stabilisers can be applied to clay plasters to stabilise the top surface and provide a little more abrasion resistance, however the application of any type of synthetic resin based surface binder will drastically reduce breathability and moisture control.
After extensive evaluation, we concluded that adding natural hydraulic lime to the clay had significant benefits in terms of its durability without affecting its breathability or its ability to regulate moisture.
Hydraulic lime not only stops it from softening when wet, but also makes it possible to seal the surface with a natural olive oil-based soap. The soap oil protectant reacts chemically with the free calcium ions in the lime to impart a natural water resistance to the surface without the need to resort to synthetic sealers.
Armourcoat’s primary goal in developing the clay plaster was to focus on sustainable architecture. For a product to be truly sustainable, it must also have longevity.
