How to apply iron paints?

Preparation

It is recommended to wear gloves when carrying out this work.

On new ferrous metals: the surfaces to be painted must be clean, dry and free of traces of grease, corrosion or salts (if necessary, brush and remove rust). Degrease with acetone.

On old or oxidized ferrous metals: remove non-adherent parts (loose paint) with a wire brush or coarse iron sandpaper. Clean carefully and degrease with acetone.

On painted iron, in good condition: sand to roughen the surface and clean carefully. Carry out an adhesion test.

On painted iron, with damaged paint: remove the peeling paint using an abrasive or a paint remover.

On another paint or substrate, check compatibility: on a small area, apply a coat of MaxMeyer – Mano Antica or Smalto TRE in UNO. Let dry and scrape to check adhesion.

Application

For optimal performance, avoid working in the sun and choose dry, windless weather.

Clean and degrease your substrate, whether new or old, using one of the iron preparation processes.

You can then apply a first and then a second coat of paint.

Follow the drying time and application instructions using the instructions on your packaging.

It is recommended that the first coat be applied with a roller or brush, in order to fill in all the irregularities of the substrate.

Tips and Tricks

The hardening will only be complete after several days, take some precautions in the first few days.

If the metal has been prepared in advance (scraped, brushed, stripped, degreased, etc.), make sure to paint the clean metal as soon as possible, to avoid the reappearance of traces of corrosion.
